Today, Clair McCaskill got her wish; Karl Rove's Super PAC, Crossroads GPS, has officially announced that it will be pulling all funds from the Missouri Senate race between Todd Akin and Claire McCaskill. The announcement came this afternoon, after Akin's offensive remarks on Sunday about what qualifies as 'legitimate rape'.
On Sunday,
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) claimed that “legitimate rape” does not often lead to pregnancy because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”Rove is smart enough to realize that Akin is in deep trouble, and probably won't be able to dig himself out the hole that his offensive remarks have created.
President Obama spoke on the issue today;
WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House spokesman says a GOP Senate candidate's comments on rape are "offensive" and "wrong."
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday that comments by Missouri Congressman Todd Akin are "factually wrong, medically wrong and offensive."Akin said in an interview Sunday that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in "a legitimate rape" and that conception is rare in such cases.Akin, who is running to unseat Missouri's Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, apologized for his comments Monday and said he plans to stay in the Senate race.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called comments "insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong."Two Republican senators have called for Akin to drop out of the Senate race.
